Dupont Circle, Connecticut Ave, Midtown and Golden Triangle

The combined population of the Dupont Circle, Midtown and Golden Triangle neighborhoods is about 17,000. Public education is provided by District of Columbia Public Schools, which operates 170 campuses throughout D.C.

The sites to see in Dupont Circle, Midtown and Golden Triangle include mansions-turned-museums and the independent specialty stores, cafes, bookstores and restaurants that give the area its alluring flair. Some of the prominent landmarks are the Phillips Collection, the Heurich mansion and the Patterson House.

The Phillips Collection has the distinction of being America’s first modern art museum. In 1921, Duncan Phillips opened his home and his art collection to the public. Nine years later, the collection had grown so much that the Phillips family made the decision to relocate and convert the home into a museum. Today’s permanent collection includes works by Renoir, van Gogh, Monet, Degas, Picasso, Matisse, O’Keeffe, Eakins and many more.

The Christian Heurich Mansion, also called the Brewmaster’s Castle, is an ornately decorated, 19th century mansion. Christian Heurich was a German immigrant and brewmaster who became one of Washington’s most successful residents. He came to the U.S. in the latter half of the 19th century and quickly made his mark as sole owner of Christian Heurich Brewing Company. The home and most of its original furnishings have been preserved to reflect Heurich’s tastes and lifestyle.

Another symbol of the neighborhood’s glamorous history is the Patterson House. The marble and terra-cotta mansion was designed by architect Stanford White for Robert Patterson, editor of the Chicago Tribune, and his wife Elizabeth. The home was, for a time, a gathering place on the Washington social scene. Notably, President and Mrs. Calvin Coolidge stayed in the home in 1927 while the White House was being modernized.
